Stewie2k’s Career
Yip was born on 7 January 1998 in San Francisco, California. Yip grew up with his brother and sister. Yip was first introduced into gaming by his brother. He picked up Counter-Strike 1.6 from his older brother. Yip’s parents didn’t approve of his gaming and were always against it. Yip’s parents wanted him to have a normal career as a doctor or lawyer. And his passion for gaming ultimately ended up causing troubles between him and his mother. Yip’s mother believes him to be a failure and because of that Stewie decided to leave his home and he flew to LA to pursue his interests in gaming.
For some time Yip stopped playing Counter-Strike 1.6 and tried other games like RuneScape, MapleStory, League of Legends, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. But eventually, he ended up coming back to Counter-Strike 1.6. Stewie first played Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in the summer of 2014 when his friend gave him a copy as a gift. Yip grinded CS: GO for hours a day and was inspired by Cloud9 videos. He played matchmaking for 5 months before making the switch to ESEA. At that time Stewie was falsely accused of cheating many times by several players. Which boosted his morale and his motivation to pursue a Professional CS: GO career.
From the age of 17, Yip has his eye set on becoming a professional CS: GO player and after Sean Gares announced he was leaving cloud9, Team decided to pick up Stewie with Gares’ recommendation. Yip signed his contract with Cloud9 just a few hours after his 18th birthday and joined the team on January 11, 2016, as an IGL. This decision of Org was questioned and criticized by many Veteran players and Esports journalists. Duncan “Thorin” Shields, questioned Yip’s addition to the Cloud9 roster as well as Yip’s abilities.
Yip played for Cloud9 for 2 years and as an IGL won them several tournaments like ESL Pro League Season 4, DreamHack Open Denver 2017, and iBUYPOWER Masters 2017. Yip and his team became the first North-American team to win a Major after defeating FaZe clan in double overtime on map 3 of the grand final in ELEAGUE Major: Boston 2018. In April 2018, Stewie left cloud9 and joined SK gaming. Later, SK gaming roster was signed by MIBR to play under their Org.
In December 2018, MIBR traded Yip to Team Liquid for Epitácio “TACO” de Melo and head coach Wilton “zews” Prado.
Yip became the first North American to earn over $1,000,000 in tournament prize money after they fall to Astralis in the ECS Season 8 Finals and ended up being runner up. Yip and Team Liquid ended up winning a total of 7 tournaments and earning more than $2.31 million in 2019.
